Making Inference: How to Understand Information That Is Not Directly Stated

Making Inference means using clues from the text and your own knowledge to understand something that the writer does not say directly.

What Does Making Inference Mean?

Text Clues + Your Knowledge = Inference

Direct Information vs. Inference

Inference.

Direct Information

Ahmed was wearing a heavy coat, gloves, and a scarf.

Inference

The weather was probably cold.

The weather was cold.

Making Inference.

How to Make an Inference

Step 1: Find the Clues

Step 2: Use Your Knowledge

Step 3: Make a Logical Conclusion

Example:

Sara opened her umbrella before leaving the house.

Clue:

Sara opened an umbrella.

What do we know?

People usually use umbrellas when it is raining or when rain is expected.

Inference:

It was probably raining or going to rain.

Example 1: Making Inference About Feelings

Tom looked at the test paper, lowered his head, and said nothing.

Question:

How does Tom probably feel?

Answer:

He probably feels sad or disappointed.

  • He looked at the test paper.

  • He lowered his head.

  • He said nothing.

Example 2: Making Inference About the Weather

Mary put on her coat, boots, and gloves before leaving home.

Question:

What can you infer about the weather?

Answer:

The weather was probably cold.

Why?

لأن Mary ترتدي:

coat + boots + gloves

Example 3: Making Inference About a Place

The room was full of desks, chairs, books, and a large whiteboard.

Question:

Where is the person probably located?

Answer:

The person is probably in a classroom.

This is a classroom.

  • desks

  • chairs

  • books

  • whiteboard

Example 4: Making Inference About an Activity

Ahmed was wearing sports shoes and a T-shirt. He was running around a large field with eleven other players.

Question:

What was Ahmed probably doing?

Answer:

He was probably playing football.

Evidence:

  • sports shoes

  • T-shirt

  • large field

  • eleven other players

Example 5: Making Inference About a Person's Feelings

Sarah smiled when she opened the box and saw a beautiful watch inside.

Question:

How did Sarah probably feel?

Answer:

She was probably happy or excited.

Sarah.

Making Inference in Reading Questions

What can you infer from the passage?

What can be inferred from the text?

What does the writer imply?

What is suggested by the passage?

What can we conclude from the passage?

Making Inference.

Important Words in Inference Questions

infer – imply – suggest – conclude – probably – likely

Example:

The streets were empty, and most shops were closed. The city was unusually quiet.

Question:

What can you infer?

It was probably very late at night.

There were very few people outside.

Inference Does Not Mean Guessing

Inference ≠ Guessing

Wrong:

The man was wearing a black shirt, so he was probably angry.

Better:

The man was shouting, his face was red, and he was hitting the table.

Inference:

He was probably angry.

How to Find Clues in a Reading Passage

1. Actions

2. Feelings

3. Descriptions

4. Words and Expressions

5. Results

A Useful Strategy: Think Like a Detective

Be a detective!

Example:

John entered the house with wet clothes and muddy shoes. He put his umbrella near the door.

Detective's Clues:

  • wet clothes

  • muddy shoes

  • umbrella

Inference:

It was probably raining outside.

More Examples for Students

Example 1

Linda was holding a birthday cake and there were balloons everywhere.

Inference:

It was probably someone's birthday.

Example 2

The students opened their books and took out their pens when the teacher entered the room.

Inference:

They were probably ready to start a lesson.

Example 3

David kept looking at his watch while waiting at the station.

Inference:

He was probably worried about being late.

Example 4

The baby was crying loudly, and the mother picked him up.

Inference:

The baby was probably uncomfortable or needed something.

Example 5

There were many empty food containers on the table after the party.

Inference:

Many people probably ate at the party.

Making Inference from a Longer Text

Text:

Ali woke up early on Saturday morning. He put on his football shirt and packed a bottle of water. His father drove him to a large sports field. When they arrived, Ali joined a group of boys who were wearing similar shirts.

Question:

What can we infer about Ali?

Answer:

Ali probably plays football or was going to play a football match.

Why?

لدينا عدة clues:

  • football shirt

  • bottle of water

  • sports field

  • other boys wearing similar shirts

A Simple Formula for Making Inference

CLUE + CLUE + KNOWLEDGE → INFERENCE

Wet clothes + umbrella + dark clouds → It is probably raining.

Books + desks + teacher + students → It is probably a classroom.

Tips for Students

1. Don't Look for the Exact Words

2. Look for Evidence

What clues does the writer give me?

3. Use Your Background Knowledge

4. Avoid Extreme Answers

5. Choose the Most Logical Answer

Practice: Can You Make an Inference?

James came home from school, dropped his bag on the floor, and immediately went to bed. His mother noticed that his face was pale and that he looked very tired.

Question:

What can you infer about James?

Answer:

James was probably very tired or feeling unwell.

Evidence:

  • He went to bed immediately.

  • His face was pale.

  • He looked very tired.

Another Practice Question

The restaurant was completely full. People were waiting outside, and all the tables were occupied.

Question:

What can you infer about the restaurant?

Answer:

The restaurant was probably very popular or busy.

completely full + people waiting + all tables occupied

Conclusion

Find the clues → Use your knowledge → Make a logical conclusion.

Inference is not guessing. It is making a logical conclusion based on evidence.
